Remembering DJ Deckstream R.I.P.
Peace World. It has been a very rough year for Hip Hop worldwide. We've lost a lot of amazing artists. Weeks ago we lost Sean Price. In June, I lost my friend and fellow Plague member, PH (formerly known as Pumpkinhead). And last week, my former collaborator DJ Deckstream died in a traffic accident.
Instagram post below from Shing02...
When I met Jun (Nujabes) in 2000, he immediately introduced me to his production partner, DJ Deckstream, then known as Monorisick. Equally talented but very much Jun's opposite or as I'd like to think: the balance. Jun was often reserved, while Monorisick was VERY expressive. Even though he spoke very little english, he went above and beyond to converse with me using a digital Japanese to English translator. His physical comedy and oneliners made this homesick MC's weeks in Tokyo more bearable. Whether barhopping or arm wrestling before a studio session, he was always full of life and smiling.
I had the pleasure of making several records with him, such as 'I'll Be Back' from Sweep's Love Beats album, 'Precious Love' ft. Milka & 'Destination Sky' which was the B side to his 12" single 'Life Is Good' with Mos Def which happens to be my favorite track that he's produced.
Our biggest song together to date is 'Home Sweet Home' which people often mistake as being produced by Nujabes. He also produced More Than A Game & Kalitwutchuwon2 and a slew of remixes from my debut album, To This Union A Was Born released by Hydeout Productions in 2001.
He's also worked with a lot of amazing artists from around the world such as Lupe Fiasco, T-Boz (of TLC), Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Verbal (of m-flo), Shing02, Nikki Jean & many more.
I am blessed to have known such a talented and fun person and I'm deeply saddened by his passing. We hadn't seen each other in quite some time, but the last time I saw him he seemed to be the same funny and happy guy I remembered from the early Hydeout days, and that's how I'll always remember him.
REST IN PEACE, my friend.

With Fall in full swing, it's only fitting that Substantial & Marcus D officially release their latest single, Autumn Leaves. Guest vocals from the always soulful Pismo, add the perfect touch to this Autumn anthem while Marcus D's stellar production sonically captures the coolness and brilliant colors of the season. Substantial's lyrics, inspired by Gordon Park's book To Smile In Autumn, talk about setting new goals after reaching those from his youth as his life approaches the Autumn years.
It’s like I reached that point where many folk lives get froze
Instead I’m busy living most of my childhood goals
Never stagnant, forever I’ll strive for more
This elevator’s barely above the bottom floor
Autumn Leaves is from Bop Alloy's critically acclaimed 2nd album, Another Day in the Life of... if you're a vinyl record enthusiast, you'll be happy to know that the duo recently released Limited Edition EP version on 12" vinyl. Pick up your copy today and don't forget, there's more Bop Alloy right around the corner. The Winter Breaks Digital-Only EP drops this December 2014.

[CAMPAIGN] My Middle School Needs Help Funding Their Passion for Theater
As many of you know, I'm not just an MC, I'm a youth worker/educator. I've been blessed with the opportunity to work with Oxon Hill Middle School for the last 4 school years as a Student Advocate and conducting Music Production & Art workshops after school. Some of my students are working with their Drama teacher to put on a production of Grease and they need our help.
Please contribute and/or help me spread the word. Lets fund these young Kings & Queens' passion for theater.
P.E.A.C.E. & Thanks

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: September 4, 2014
MARYLAND MC SUBSTANTIAL (OF BOP ALLOY)
SIGNS DEAL WITH HiPNOTT RECORDS

"SPLENDOR"
PROD BY SATELLITE 12 (MEGADEMUS & R.M.S.)
HiPNOTT Records is proud to announce today that we have signed a multi project deal with Maryland MC Substantial. This deal solidifies Substantial as a HiPNOTT recording artist and enables him to be one of the premier artists on the label.
"Signing Substantial to HiPNOTT was a no brainer. Along with talent and experience, Substantial brings a big fanbase with him to the label. He has a very genuine personality and his style fits in perfectly with what we represent at HiPNOTT. We welcome him to the family with open arms!" Kevin Nottingham, owner of HiPNOTT Records.
As a 13 year veteran in Hip Hop, Substantial is probably best known for his work with legendary Japanese produce Nujabes and his duo Bop Alloy with Marcus . He has collaborated with the likes of Oddisee, Kool Herc, Cunninlynguists, Bootsy Collins, and many more. His 2012 album, Home Is Where The Art Is (Mello Music Group), was revered by hip hop fans worldwide.
In 2015, look out for a trio of EPs to be released from Substantial; each produced by different producers. Closing out the year will be his next official full length album.

ABOUT SUBSTANTIAL:
When Stan B. Robinson was given the moniker, Substantial, the Maryland born MC was anxious to know why the name was chosen for him. His friend replied, “It’s a word with many meanings, mostly positive. Real, strong, essential, influential. It represents the music you make.” The bar was set high from the onset.
With his 1st album, To This Union A Sun Was Born (Hyde Out Productions) Substantial delivered a critically acclaimed debut album after being sought out by the late Nujabes, who also produced most of the record. His 2nd album and QN5 Music debut, Sacrifice, also well received, landed him on MTV, BET & VH1. When Sub’s 3rd album, Home Is Where The Art Is was released by Mello Music Group in 2012, Ebony.com said “you need this in your life if you’re a lover of hip-hop.” Substantial has also released several mixtapes, group projects and compilations including his popular tribute to Philadelphia songstress, Jill Scott, entitled Jackin’ Jill.
Mello Music Group Producer/MC Oddisee had this to say about his DMV brethren: “Substantial got an ill flow. His cadence is so rhythmic, so razor sharp and it’s so consistent… But the subject matter of the music isn’t compromised by him always trying to deliver some pristine delivery …you get style and substance.”
His top notch skills and unique baritone vocals have taken him around the globe touring various countries in Asia, Europe & North America. He has collaborated with a long list of artists which includes names like the legendary Godfather of Hip Hop, Kool Herc, Bootsy Collins, all-star rockers Gene Simmons & Bruce Kulick of KISS, Oddisee, CunninLynguists, GRAMMY nominated singer/songwriter Carolyn Malachi, Marcus D & electronic music producers Chew Fu & Ferry Corsten to name a few.
With a slew of accomplishment under his belt in the music industry, what Substantial is most proud of his youth advocacy work with children, teens and young adults. He has and still, in some cases, facilitates Hip Hop based programs for organizations such as Covenant House, Baltimore City & Prince George’s County Public Schools, & Maryland-National Park & Planning Commission in Washington, DC & Maryland.
Adding a new chapter to his quietly impressive career, Substantial has returned to the studio to work on his 4th solo album. The new LP will feature production from Oddisee, Marcus D, Algorythm (of The Stuyvesants), & The Other Guys. Given his track record so far, you know Substantial will live up to his name and set the bar higher this time around.
