I had the honor and pleasure of teaming up with legendary composer Grant Kirkhope to reimagine DK Rap on his new LP, Rare Treats: DONKEY KONG 64 Revisited.

“Donkey Kong 64 turns 25 on November 22, and Screen Rant is happy to share a way to celebrate, courtesy of game composer Grant Kirkhope and Materia Collective. On November 22, Kirkhope will release Rare Treats: DONKEY KONG 64 Revisited, a new version of the game’s soundtrack re-arranged and revisited by its original composer. The album will feature 18 tracks and will be available to stream and for purchase on CD and vinyl.

Screen Rant is thrilled to debut Kirkhope’s reimagining of the infamous “DK Rap”, this time featuring Washington DC-area-based rapper Substantial. It's a little tongue-in-cheek bars, with a ton of veteran swag, wrapped in an exciting, upbeat, Hip-Hop dance track. “Look at all that wisdom!”

“1580” is a tribute to the late, shortlived Rap and Go-Go station, Flava 1580AM, and the ups and downs of growing up in Prince George's County, MD in the 90s. “P.G. County laid the foundation for the men we’d become and Flava 1580AM added fuel to the flames within us that pushed us to become the best MCs/artists we could be.” says Substantial. T.Lucas added “This song represents some of my fond childhood memories. One of my favorite pastimes was laying on the floor of my parent’s living room between 7 to 9 pm and listening to Flava 1580 on the AM dial. I remember hearing all the new and exciting hip-hop songs that were being released at that time in the golden era of hip-hop, the 90s. It reminds me of innocence and the simpler times”.

“1580” is from Substantial’s upcoming 5th solo album Adultish. In 2015, NYC Manga Artist Kenya Danino (otherwise known as KDFoxx) created and performed spoken word poetry from her Boston College thesis: Kingdom Animalia. The collection of poems highlighted the human nature of emotions - using animal imagery to convey the thoughts we keep in the dark for fear of being misunderstood.  As she pursued her artistic endeavors, she connected with and bonded over love of music, poetry, and anime with the legendary MC, Substantial- who in the past collaborated with the late Japanese producer, Nujabes. Together, they began to construct a poetic project that merged a 90's-esque dystopian fantasy manga with the raw energy of Hip-Hop and Jazz to tell a story with a fresh perspective on navigating difficult times.  

Thus now in the tumultuous year of 2021, they are thrilled to kick off the Animal Arithmetic: Beasts of Burden project; a powerful narrative about navigating life as if the days were numbered. We are humbled and excited to bring you an original manga and music project about the unique journies of those who feel deeply- and KNOW even deeper.
